First aid skills can fade when they are not regularly practised.
Refresher First Aid Training revisits essential knowledge, corrects skill deterioration and gives participants an opportunity to practise responding under pressure.
Training focuses on:
Recognising emergencies early
Reassessing an injured or unwell person
Refreshing CPR and AED skills
Reinforcing correct first aid techniques
Rebuilding confidence under pressure
Making clear decisions in an emergency
Communicating and working effectively as a team
This course is intended for participants who have previously completed Workplace, Comprehensive or equivalent practical first aid training.
Participants must provide a copy of their previous first aid certificate before attending the course.
RealMed accepts eligible participants for refresher training:
While their previous certificate is current; or
Within three months of its expiry date
A first aid certificate expires after two years. The additional three months provide an eligibility window for attending refresher training, it does not extend the validity of the expired certificate.
If your certificate expired more than three months ago, you will need to complete either Workplace First Aid or Comprehensive First Aid Training.
Eligibility is subject to confirmation by RealMed First Aid.
The course uses a blended-learning format to maximise practical training time.
Particpants complete approximately four hours of self-paced online learning before the practical training session.
The online learning revisits essential first aid knowledge and provides an update on current emergency-care principles.
A four-hour practical session is delivered at your workplace, school or organisation.
Participants refresh their skills through hands-on activities, practical assessment and realistic emergency scenarios.

New Zealand workplaces must provide adequate first aid equipment, facilities and access to an adequate number of trained first aiders.
A workplace’s first aid arrangements should reflect its size, location, workforce, identified hazards and likely emergency-service response time.
WorkSafe recommends that workplace first aiders receive training from an NZQA-accredited organisation.
RealMed First Aid is not an NZQA-accredited provider and does not award or renew NZQA unit standards. Our training is delivered by an NZ Resuscitation Council-approved Emergency Care Instructor, aligned with current ANZCOR guidelines and tailored to the needs and risks of each workplace.
Participants who successfully complete the course receive a RealMed First Aid certificate valid for two years.
If your employer, industry body, contract or organisation specifically requires NZQA unit standards, you should select an NZQA-accredited training provider.
Our focus is simple: preparing people to respond effectively in real emergencies.
What is Refresher First Aid Training?
Refresher First Aid Training updates and reinforces the knowledge and practical skills developed during previous first aid training.
The course revisits CPR, AED use, choking, bleeding, injuries, burns and common medical emergencies.
Who can attend a refresher course?
You must have previously completed Workplace, Comprehensive or equivalent practical first aid training.
You will need to provide a copy of your previous first aid certificate so RealMed can confirm your eligibility.
Can I attend if my certificate has expired?
Yes, provided your certificate expired no more than three months before the refresher course date.
The three-month period allows you to remain eligible for refresher training. It does not mean your expired certificate remains current during that period.
If your certificate expired more than three months ago, you will need to complete a full Workplace or Comprehensive First Aid course.
How is the course delivered?
Participants complete approximately four hours of self-paced online learning before attending a four-hour onsite practical session.
The practical session uses hands-on activities, performance feedback and realistic scenarios to reinforce essential skills.
How long is the new certificate valid?
The RealMed First Aid certificate is valid for two years from the date the refresher course is successfully completed.
ANZCOR recommends that CPR skills be refreshed at least annually.
Does this course renew NZQA unit standards?
No. RealMed First Aid is not an NZQA-accredited provider, and the refresher course does not award or renew NZQA unit standards.
Participants receive a RealMed First Aid certificate after successfully completing the course.
If your workplace specifically requires current NZQA unit standards, this course may not be suitable.
Can we combine Refresher and Comprehensive participants?
Yes. Refresher and Comprehensive First Aid participants can train together during the practical session.
Refresher participants complete their required training and finish earlier, while Comprehensive participants continue with the additional course content.
Can the training be tailored to our workplace?
Yes. Let us know if your workplace has identified hazards, medical risks or emergency procedures that you would like covered in more detail.
Do you provide the training equipment?
Yes. RealMed provides all CPR manikins, training AEDs, medical equipment, realistic training props and other resources required for the course.
Where is the training delivered?
