Outdoor First Aid Training
Practical, scenario-based training for people working or participating in outdoor environments where professional help may be delayed.
Develop the skills and confidence to monitor a casualty, provide ongoing care, manage environmental challenges and support a safe evacuation.
Delivered by an NZ Resuscitation Council-certified Emergency Care Instructor, with first aid content aligned with current ANZCOR guidelines.
$179 incl. GST per person
Scenarios can be adapted to your operating environment and likely emergencies. Bespoke scenario development, site visits or custom training resources can be provided by quotation.
When Help is Hours Away
Providing initial first aid may be only the beginning of an outdoor emergency.
When professional assistance is delayed, responders must continue monitoring the casualty, protect them from the environment, manage their comfort and decide whether movement or evacuation is required.
Training focuses on:
Monitoring changes in the casualty’s condition
Providing ongoing care and environmental protection
Managing the casualty’s comfort and personal needs
Making decisions with limited equipment and resources
Moving a casualty safely
Communicating with outside assistance
Planning an evacuation
Providing a structured handover
Course Format
This course uses a blended-learning format to maximise practical training time.
Online pre-course learning
Participants complete self-paced online learning before the practical training day.
The online learning introduces outdoor emergency planning, environmental hazards, casualty monitoring, communication, evacuation and helicopter safety.
Outdoor practical training
The practical session is delivered in a suitable outdoor environment using hands-on activities and realistic team scenarios.
Practical session: Approximately 8 hours
Delivery: At your outdoor workplace or a suitable outdoor location
Certificate: Valid for two years
Minimum age: 16 years
Previous training: Current Comprehensive First Aid or equivalent practical training
Course Content
This course builds on existing first aid skills and focuses on caring for a casualty when professional assistance may be several hours away.
Participants develop practical skills in:
Ongoing casualty assessment, monitoring and recording
Comfort, personal care and environmental protection
Managing heat, cold and changing weather conditions
Safe positioning, lifting and casualty movement
Using commercial and improvised carrying equipment
Emergency communications and evacuation planning
Providing a structured casualty handover
Decision-making during extended outdoor emergencies
Reporting and managing serious incidents and fatalities
Practical Outdoor Scenarios
Participants apply their knowledge through realistic team scenarios involving extended casualty care, environmental protection, movement, evacuation and handover.
Scenarios may require participants to:
Assess and regularly reassess a casualty
Allocate roles within the group
Establish shelter and protect the casualty from the environment
Record vital signs and changes in condition
Develop and communicate an evacuation plan
Move the casualty using a litter or improvised equipment
Provide an IMIST-AMBO handover
Training equipment may include:
Realistic silicone wounds and scenario props
Casualty monitoring and handover cards
Splints and trauma equipment
Litters and casualty-movement equipment
Improvised shelter equipment
Emergency blankets and/or hypothermia bivvies
Emergency communication equipment for demonstration
Scenarios can be tailored to your workplace, environment, available equipment and emergency procedures.

Participants must be at least 16 years old and able to take part in practical outdoor activities.

Important Course Information
Outdoor First Aid builds on existing first aid knowledge and does not replace initial first aid training.
Participants should hold a current Comprehensive First Aid certificate or have completed equivalent practical first aid training.
For groups requiring both courses, Comprehensive First Aid and Outdoor First Aid can be delivered on consecutive days.
RealMed First Aid is not an NZQA-accredited provider, and this course does not award NZQA unit standards or credits.
Participants who successfully complete the course receive a RealMed Outdoor First Aid certificate valid for two years.

Can the course be held at our premises?
Yes, provided your premises have a suitable outdoor training area. RealMed will discuss the location, hazards and emergency access before confirming the course.
Does the course need to be held outdoors?
Yes. The practical activities require a suitable outdoor area for casualty care, shelter, movement and evacuation scenarios.
Do I need a current first aid certificate?
Yes. Participants should hold a current Comprehensive First Aid certificate or have completed equivalent practical training.

Does the course include casualty movement?
Yes. Participants practise safe lifting, coordinated team movement and the use of commercial and improvised carrying equipment.
Can the scenarios be tailored?

What happens if the weather is unsuitable?
The course may be modified, relocated or postponed if the weather or terrain creates an unacceptable risk.
