The recent tragedy at Bondi has shaken people across Australia and New Zealand. Lives were lost, families were shattered, and many more were changed forever in a matter of minutes. In the aftermath of events like this, a difficult but essential question always follows:
What could have been done in those first critical minutes before emergency services arrived?
While no amount of training can prevent acts of violence, there is something the public can do to reduce preventable deaths — control life‑threatening bleeding.
Uncontrolled bleeding is one of the leading causes of preventable death in trauma. A person with a severe arterial bleed can bleed to death in three to five minutes — often faster than an ambulance can arrive.
Although these incidents are rare, they do occur.
In incidents like Bondi, and closer to home with the Christchurch terror attack, injuries may include:
Stab wounds
Gunshot wounds
Penetrating trauma
Severe lacerations from broken glass or debris
These injuries don’t wait.
Without immediate action, even survivable wounds can become fatal.
Controlling a life‑threatening bleed is not complicated — but it does require training and confidence.
Key lifesaving skills include:
Recognising life‑threatening bleeding
Applying firm, effective direct pressure
Wound packing for deep or junctional wounds
Correct application of a tourniquet
Managing casualties for shock and hypothermia
Knowing what not to do (such as removing impaled objects)
These are practical skills that ordinary people — teachers, retail staff, parents, security guards, and bystanders — can learn and apply under pressure.
Training alone is not enough if people do not have access to the right medical supplies when an incident occurs.
Having first aid kits that are specifically designed to stop a life-threatening bleed is just as critical as knowing what to do.
Bleeding control kits should include:
Trauma dressings and compression bandages
Tourniquets suitable for severe bleeding
Wound packing gauze
Gloves and basic protective equipment
Thermal blankets to help prevent hypothermia after bleeding is controlled
Standard workplace first aid kits are often not equipped to manage catastrophic haemorrhage. Purpose-built bleeding control kits ensure that lifesaving actions can begin immediately, rather than waiting for emergency services to arrive.
Major incidents don’t just happen in hospitals or remote locations. They happen in:
Shopping centres
Schools
Public transport hubs
Events and festivals
Workplaces
In those moments, the first person on scene is rarely a medic — it’s a member of the public.
Empowering everyday people with bleeding control skills turns bystanders into immediate lifesavers.
At Realmed First Aid, we believe that lifesaving skills should be accessible, practical, and realistic.

The Bondi tragedy is a harsh reminder that emergencies can happen anywhere, to anyone, at any time.
While we can’t control the actions of others, we can control how prepared we are to respond.
Learning how to stop a life‑threatening bleed is not just a skill — it’s a responsibility.
If you’re a business owner, school leader, event organiser, or community group, now is the time to ask:
