Uncontrolled bleeding is the leading cause of preventable trauma deaths. A person can die in under five minutes—often before help arrives. This course teaches you how to respond quickly and effectively.
Stop the Bleed is a U.S. campaign launched after the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting, developed by the American College of Surgeons. It empowers bystanders to control bleeding and save lives. Millions have been trained worldwide.
In rural or remote areas of New Zealand, emergency services can take longer to arrive. Having bystanders trained in bleeding control can make the critical difference in those first few minutes after an injury.
Severe bleeding doesn't only happen in extreme situations. Farm injuries, car accidents, workplace incidents, and outdoor activities (like hiking or hunting) are all common scenarios in New Zealand where bleeding control can save lives.
New Zealand is prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, where emergency services may be overwhelmed or delayed. In such scenarios, community members trained in basic trauma care can play a vital role in helping others.
The campaign promotes resilience by giving ordinary people the confidence and skills to act in emergencies, contributing to safer schools, homes, and public spaces.
